Earlier today, Joe Pompeo, Politico Media’s senior media reporter and author of its Morning Media newsletter, covered Sam Stein’s move to the Daily Beast. Later, there would be news of another move: his own.
Pompeo is moving to Vanity Fair, where he will be senior media correspondent for The Hive, the publication’s tech, media and politics site.
Pompeo’s move comes at a time of change for Politico Media both in the scope of coverage and staff, as a number of other media reporters have left recently. Just this past April, media reporter Kelsey Sutton left Politico for Mic, and media reporter Peter Sterne left for the Freedom of the Press Foundation to head up its U.S. Press Freedom Tracker site.
The publication also changed the focus of its media coverage, moving away from industry news and concentrating on media’s intersection with politics.
Here’s what Pompeo tweeted when the Business Insider published its report of the changes, which also detailed a plan to move some of the New York-based staff to Washington:
Just not at Politico, it turns out.
Pompeo had come to Politico by way of Capital New York, the outlet that Politico purchased in 2013 and Pompeo had been at since 2011. Its name was change to Politico New York in 2015, which is when New York and Washington media staff merged to form Politico Media.
