Who needs iTunes or Rhapsody? In Japan it’s all about downloading music right to a cell phone. New figures from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), that country’s answer to the RIAA, mobile downloads accounted for more than 90% of digital music sales last year, according to a MocoNews report.
Full-track downloads grew more than any other form of mobile music, up 91% over 2006, the article says, citing Japan’s Music Media Watch newsletter.
Overall, music sales in Japan reached $4.66 billion in 2007. Digital downloads accounted for $755 million, or 16% of total sales.
