The Washington Examiner‘s Editor Stephen Smith announces today “with real regret” the departure of Sports Editor James Irwin. Irwing’s leaving the publication to become assistant director of the Alumni Assoc. at James Madison University, which is his alma mater.
Best wishes to Irwin.
See Smith’s words of praise…
It is with real regret that I announce that James Irwin, our sports editor since 2009, is leaving the Examiner to become assistant director of the Alumni Association at James Madison University, his alma mater.
James made our sports section “must” reading for Washington fans across the region and across the nation. He brought imagination and a deft editing touch to our coverage, leaning into the news rather than reacting to it. He also oversaw a strong move online, creating and sharpening widely read blogs by our talented team of beat reporters.
Before taking over the top job, James spent two years in the sports section as associate editor and page designer.
As anyone who knows James can attest, his heart never left JMU. As an undergraduate, he covered 15 NCAA Division 1 athletic programs as a writer and editor for the student newspaper and also worked in the university’s sports information office.
In his new post, he will be in charge of communications for the alumni office and will serve as associate editor of the alumni magazine. Here’s hoping he brings some luck to his beloved Dukes, who haven’t experienced March Madness since 1994.
Please join me in wishing him well in his new endeavor.
