Is the NY Times Trying to Tell Us Something?

So first there’s this whole investigation into a mysteriously familiar tag, and it turns out the NY Times seems to have commissioned street artist Espo to paint the town T. While Gawker guesses that it’s to promote the upcoming T style section, they obviously didn’t get around to reading the Magazine this weekend, where there’s an extra-long piece by the great Rob Walker about–no way!–counterculture branding.

It’s not the first time they’ve directed our attention towards the Matthew Carter-designed type, which they waxed poetic about earlier this year (non-Times Select peons: it’s just an article about how regular folk are becoming aware of typography). Touche, Times. Touche.
