Daring Fireball’s John Gruber took a close look at 3G wireless data performance on the iPhone 4 as compared to an iPad 3G and iPhone 3G. His results? Quite surprising (to me) and in favor of the iPhone 4.
Gruber measured 3G download speed, upload speed, and latency for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPad 3g. He also threw in data when holding an iPhone 4 in a way to create the left-antenna problem as well as the iPhone 4 on a WiFi connection.
The iPhone 4 topped all three measurements. I took his data and boiled it down to two numbers that interested me the most:
– iPhone 4 vs. iPad 3G download speed: iPhone 4 faster by 77.6%
– iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 3GS: iPhone 4 faster by 95%
I didn’t expect to see such dramatic differences in 3G download speed. This is especially true for the iPad 3G which is only a month “younger” than the iPhone 4.
