Is The iPad Killing Jobs? Jesse Jackson Jr. Thinks So [Video]

With unemployment at 9 percent and 13 million unemployed Americans, we’ve got a serious problem on our hands.  Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is blaming the iPad.

Last Friday, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., a Democrat from Illinois, addressed the House, saying the iPad “is probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs”.  Jackson brings up the fact that Borders is now closing stores asking, “Why do you need to go to Borders anymore?  Why do you need to go to Barnes & Noble?  Buy an iPad and download your newspaper, download your book, download your magazine.”

He also points out the fact that the freshman class at Chicago State University is not being given textbooks.  “They’re all being given iPads as they enter school.  President Wayne Watson hopes to have a textbookless campus within four years.”  But what does this mean for the publishing companies, libraries and educational bookstores and their employees?  What about “all the jobs associated with paper?”  Jackson thinks that in the not-too-distant future these jobs will no longer exist…all thanks to the iPad.

And the worst part?  The iPad isn’t even produced in the Unites States—it’s produced in China.  “So the Chinese get to take advantage of our first amendment value—that is, to provide freedom of speech through the iPad to the American people, but there is no protection for jobs here in America to ensure that the American people are being put to work.”  Down with the iPad!

Watch the video below and let us know what you think in the comments.  Are Jesse Jackson Jr.’s claims that the iPad is responsible for eliminating thousands of jobs ridiculous or do you agree?  And what about the Kindle and the Nook?  Aren’t those products just as much to blame for job loss as the iPad?
