Internet Use Disorder Coined By American Psychiatric Association
As media folks, let’s face it, we’re online every day, pretty much all of the time. Sure, other vocations can claim the same but we not only scour the news, most of us work in the news.
Okay, so now that we know the internet is critical to our job, um, we must face the facts: We may be addicted to it (gasp!).
According to The New York Post, the American Psychiatric Association is going to add “Internet Use Disorder” to the latest edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
The disorder will be listed in the DSM along with traits such as withdrawal symptoms when computer use is denied, continued excessive use online even if you know how dangerous the problem has become, lying to shrinks and loved ones about excessive usage and losing interest in other hobbies and interests.
