Instagram Uses FedEx to Announce Mysterious Event in NYC

Instagram forewent the traditional press release for good old-fashioned public relations—via the postal service.

CNET received a FedEx package yesterday with an invitation to “share a moment” with the Instagram team at a mysterious event in Midtown Manhattan on December 12 at 10 a.m.

A spokeswoman declined to give CNET details about the event, but industry buzz suggests Instagram may be launching a private messaging service within its photo and video app, and is experimenting with group messaging.

CNET, however, expects something else based on the invitation itself. Wrapped in brown paper, the package contained a 4-inch square wooden block with the Instagram logo printed on top—complete with wall-hanging hardware.

Last month, Instagram introduced advertisements to its photo-sharing service, which has tremendous monetizing potential for Facebook; digital ads increase returns on investment because they are cheaper and more targeted.

After selling to Facebook for $1 billion last year, the company has grown exponentially with a user base of 150 million.
