Adweek: What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
Morgan Spurlock: I usually go into my Twitter feed when I wake up and see what’s hitting on CNN or the Huffington Post. I also follow the N.Y. Times, Fox News, MSNBC, and Bloomberg. Then I go on my iPad and read more. I also tear through the digital N.Y. Post and read my horoscope for the day; Post is pretty spot on.
AW: What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?
MS: I love me some Pat Kiernan in the morning. I turn on NY1 while I get ready and get the local news, weather, and traffic before I leave.
AW: What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train, or bus?
MS: I lived in Fort Greene for the past two years and drove into the city (10 minutes door to door). On the drive I usually listen to NPR or 1010 WINS, but 1010 drives me crazy because there’s a commercial every other minute. Now I’ve just moved to Park Slope, so I’ll start taking the train into the city again. I’m excited about this because the train was prime reading time for me. Now I’ll actually read the N.Y. Times instead of skimming it like I do now.
AW: Are you a TV junkie, or on an airtime-restricted diet?
MS: I am such a TV junkie. It’s on almost all day in my office (CNN, Fox News or MSNBC).
AW: If you’re a couch potato, what do you watch, and how: TV, laptop or tablet?
MS: I consume an insane amount of programming, from comedies to drama to reality shows. I like to know what’s hitting and why and I try to stay on top of as much of this as I can.
AW: Before bed, do you: Bite into a novel; graze on Twitter; or fast until morning?
MS: Bedtime is quiet reading time. I usually have a couple books beside my bed that I am reading as well as a graphic novel or two and a few magazines.
AW: Which is more nutritious: print or Web?
MS: I’m reading more and more off my iPad now, but all the mags and newspapers are still formatted like the print versions, which I like.
AW: Give us the skinny on your favorite app.
MS: I’m a comic book geek and the comixology app is pretty awesome. You have access to thousands of titles, new and old. I don’t want to turn my son onto comics this way, so I give him ones that he can hold and read.
AW: What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
MS: I just got an iPad 2, but it was a gift, so I don’t feel that bad about it.
AW: With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
MS: I have multiple friends who send me recommendations I trust, as well as news outlets that I let steer me toward different reading materials. But even a little fat is good for you now and then.
