Word of mouth marketing is one of the most effective kinds of marketing when it comes to influencing purchase decisions.  A new infographic from WOMMA and Column Five Media takes a look at just how important and effective word of mouth marketing is, online and off.

Did you know that in America every day there are 3.3 billion brand mentions in 2.4 billion brand-related conversations?  Or that the typical American mentions specific brand names an average of 60 times per week in conversations both online and offline?

9 in 10 of these conversations occur offline, but online word of mouth marketing is on the rise thanks to the popularity of social sites like Facebook and Twitter.  Now people can recommend their favorite brands (and badmouth their not-so-favorites) to a much wider audience on social networks.  However, according to the infographic there’s a lot more recommending going on than badmouthing.  The infographic reports that the majority of brand-related conversations are positive and that the average online review is 4.3 stars out of 5.  People are much more likely to share their positive experiences than their negative ones.
