Rumors are flying around Baltimore that the Examiner is set to launch there next–with an announcement coming as early as next week.

The free Examiner, which currently publishes in Washington and San Francisco, has ambitious plans to expand into dozens of markets around the country–saving costs by centralizing resources and writers. Basically the plan is to create a tabloid USA Today with local packaging around the country.

Launching in Baltimore would allow it to draw upon the resources of the Washington shop and also attack a hometown paper that being weakened by ongoing cost-cutting by the Tribune Company…
