John “Jack” Lemmon, 80, a veteran journalist at the Washington Star, The Washington Post and the Baltimore Evening Sun, died of a heart attack April 11 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. He was a longtime Towson resident.

Mr. Lemmon was born in Pleasant Hill, Ill. His father, a businessman, was a great admirer of famed Baltimore journalist H.L. Mencken. Years later, the younger Lemmon became only the third editor to succeed Mencken at the Evening Sun.
