Engadget noted that the HP Slate 500 (Windows 7 based tablet) was on backorder on the HP shopping site. This was originally attributed to a huge demand and later, in an update to the blog, to a limited run of 5,000 units. And, yes, that is not a typo: Five thousand units.
A current check of the shopping page for the HP Slate 500 Tablet PC does not indicate any shipping delays for the $799 tablet.
I don’t have any plans to buy an HP Slate. My experience running Windows 7 on the Asus Eee PC convertible touch screen netbook was not a good one. However, if Microsoft created a tablet based on the Windows Phone 7 platform (Windows CE) and priced it between $350 and $600, I would stand in line for that device.
