How Parents Can Use Pinterest To Keep Kids Learning Over the Summer

It’s summer time, kids are out of school, and parents are likely looking for ways to keep them busy. It would be nice if they were learning too, no? One fantastic resource for parents is Pinterest expert Melissa Taylor, who curates educational content there for her Imagination Soup blog readers on her Pinterest page. Taylor lives in Denver, Colo., and is a mom of two. She has more than 1 million Pinterest followers and wrote the book "Pinterest Savvy." “Pinterest is the best one-stop-shopping experience for kids activities and learning," Taylor told SocialTimes. "I find it much easier to get ideas on Pinterest than subscribing to 100-plus blogs (like I used to do). There are so many teachers and educational bloggers on Pinterest who, like me, pin their own stuff and curate other people's content as well. Pinterest is a gold mine for parents who want to creatively keep their kids learning every day." Taylor has several pin boards that are specifically dedicated to summer learning and summer activities with kids: Summer Learning Fun and Summer Activities With Kids. Most of her boards are appropriate for kids ages 4 to 12. Taylor also has these pin boards focused on preschoolers: ECE and Preschool Learning for Kids, Reading Activities and Strategies for Kids, and Kids Play Outside and Learn. “My advice is to follow pinners who curate excellent content -- then you don't have to search for what to pin but have it stream directly into your Pinterest feed. To find the best users, find a pinner you like, and see who they follow," Taylor said. "Remember, you don't have to follow all of a pinner's boards, you can pick and choose your favorites. In other words, you could either follow all of my boards or you could just follow my boards that relate to books and reading." She also recommends turning off email notifications because they can be annoying, and use the pins you’ve collected. Pinterest has drummed up some additional inspiration with a list of top education-related boards broken down by age appropriateness and subject – from science experiments to reading lists to outdoor crafts – that will keep kids learning during the summer.
