How much does it cost to make an iPhone app? According to Quora users, the price can range anywhere from $500 to $100,000, depending on what you are making. The average price seems to be around $10,000, if it has complicated features.
Quora user David Li, a mobile investor, wrote: “It depends on how simple/complicate the app is and the developer profile (US vs. off shore, level of experience). You can get a super simple app built off shore (find developers from eLance or Odesk) for a couple thousand dollars. More complicated apps / more expensive developers will get the cost closer to $10-20K. It is also not unheard of for top quality games to cost over $100K.”
Quore user Brad Waller, an app developer, gave this advise: “Apps cost as much as you have budgeted. Seriously. When you build a house, you don’t ask the developer how much it will cost. They ask you your budget and then tell you what you can get for your money. Apps are similar. You can build a nice recipe app for a few thousand dollars, or build the AllRecipes app for ten times the price (or more). Apps cost more when you go through an agency…Build your own apps cost anywhere from $279 on up. Just watch out for monthly fees that can range from $15 to $99 a month!”
Quora user Diego Berdakin posed the question a different way, asking, “The more interesting question to look at is how little can it cost to build?” He pointed to various platforms that you can use to build an app. “Mobile Roadie – $500 (used by musicians, celebrities and tech conferences)/AppMark – $200-500 ( bloggers/magazines)/Kyte – (some big musicians signed up).”
Ryan Tinker, technical co-founder at Leap, wrote: “If you’re a startup, I suggest you break the process into 3 phases:
a. $12-20k for a private alpha prototype (your initial test for 100 people)
b. $25-50k for a public beta
c. $50-100k for your ‘official’ app”
