You may have noticed that Hostess is trending on Twitter right now. And it’s not because of their Twinkies.
In an attempt to capitalize on #OpeningDay, they declared their treats a “Touchdown.” I don’t follow anything other than tennis and I know that today is baseball’s big day. So perhaps a home run would be more appropriate?
Or maybe not! Is Hostess trolling us by purposely using the wrong scoring term so people who tweet and retweet the error into something viral? That’s the theory making the rounds in the media. The problem is you don’t want the error to overshadow the act that Hostess is trying to get some play. But at the same time, just having the image passed around could have value. We would be interested in some stats surrounding this tweet and whether or not it was successful.
Thoughts on this as a strategy?
Update: Hostess tells Business Insider, “The Touchdown’ line was intentional; it’s fun and aimed at young audiences who are in on the running joke — which, of course, is the goalllll.”
