Trust the NY Times to ruin it for the rest of us. Claire Spiegel writes about the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite, which have been something of an open secret among outdoorsy types. The five camps are spread along the 53 mile High Sierra Trail and the 800 spaces are doled out by lottery. You can apply online. The lottery closes November 30th.
Spiegel doesn’t mention it, but the camps have traditionally been one of those places where old California can be glimpses. The tent cabins and the communal meals appeal to people who look like old money, love the unspoiled outdoors, and hike without fancy equipment. You’ve been warned.
