Everyone was really excited yesterday that the first ever plus-size model would be making an appearance in this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. But the model in question, Ashley Graham, was actually in an ad for Swimsuits for All, a company specializing in swimwear in sizes 10 and up.
It’s great, but it’s not editorial content. As we noted, a baby step but not a full embrace from the SI editorial team.
Today, we have more info about the Swimsuit Issue and it turns out that there is a plus-size model among the various spreads in the magazine, this one starring Robyn Lawley. She’s among the new faces in the mag this year and she’s appeared in campaigns for Ralph Lauren and H&M.
According to Buzzfeed, Lawley is a size 12, which is very close to the average American woman’s size, but of course much larger than the average model. So kudos to Sports Illustrated for taking this step towards body diversity in magazines. If the Swimsuit Issue can do it, other magazines should be ready and eager to follow suit. The excitement that’s being generated by this news should be an indication that the reading public is ready. And the woman is clearly gorgeous, so the fact that this would even be an issue is crazy.
