Google Trends Predicts The Economy…Or Something

Via BayNewser and The Washington Post: The economy is getting better. It has to, because more people are Googling for real estate agents than they were six months ago, and because fewer people are searching Google for unemployment benefits.

Hey, Google employs a chief economist so they’ve got to get value out of him somehow.

Trouble is, at least according to Google Trends, these changes in search volume don’t look terrifically significant. On the other hand, Google chief economist Hal Varian used to teach at Berkeley, so what do we know?

Have a look at the Google Trends searches for these two terms, and a couple others, and see for yourself.
