OK, it looks like I was wrong. There is a “Google Phone”. But, it is just for Googlers dog-fooding (using their own product) for now according to the Google Mobile Blog…
However, here’s what we’ve learned about the Google Phone from reports by TechCrunch, All Things D, Nexus One Blog, and others…
So, what have we learned?
– Name = Nexus One
– Availability = January 2010
– Hardware built by HTC
– Android Version = 2.1
– Phone is unlocked
– Network type = GSM (AT&T & T-Mobile in the U.S.)
– Touch screen only – no physical keyboard
– Trackball navigation
– 5 megapixel camera with flash
After using the terrible Droid keyboard, I’m not as anti-touch-screen-only as I was just a few weeks ago. Why? I’ve learned that Android’s screen keyboard is pretty good in landscape mode. In fact, it is easier to type on the screen than the Droid’s awful QWERTY keyboard.
I was getting pretty close to buying an unlocked Nokia N900. Now, I’m glad I delayed that decision. I think I’ll save my nickels and dimes to buy a Nexus One next month 🙂
