Today's Google Doodle is an homage to Miriam Makeba, the civil rights activist and singer from South Africa whose hit song, "Pata Pata," peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 after it made its way to the U.S. in 1967.

Today’s Google Doodle is an homage to Miriam Makeba, the civil rights activist and singer from South Africa whose hit song, “Pata Pata,” peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 after it made its way to the U.S. in 1967.

Through her music, Makeba broke down cultural barriers (she embraced the nickname “The Click Song” as an English-friendly alternative to her rendition of a traditional Xhosa song, “Qongqothwane”) and fought against Apartheid, or racial segregation, in South Africa.
