App Curates Multiple Perspectives of the Same News Story

Currently in beta mode, Perspecs gets six-figure boost from Google.

Among the 128 projects in Europe recently earmarked for funding by Google’s Digital News Initiative (DNI) is the App Perspecs.

Developed by U.K. publisher Trinity Mirror, Perspecs curates three different sides or perspectives of the same news story and presents the contrasting coverage to readers in a way that is easy to swipe and compare. Sources being used for the App, which is currently in beta, include The New York Times, CNN and GQ magazine. From a report by U.K.’s Hold the Front Page:

Examples of how Perspecs can be used include the ability to view neutral, left and right-wing political perspectives of the same story, or a home, away and neutral report on a soccer result.

Darren Sher, head of product for Trinity Mirror Regionals, Apps & Email, said: “The funding and recognition from Google is a huge boost for Perspecs. It opens up a number of opportunities to help us build our audience and further develop the infrastructure and reach of the App.”

Other recipients of first-phase DNI grants, which were announced last week, include the Spanish journalism crowd-funding platform El Diaro, a Real-Time Sports Action Visualizer being developed by the Telegraph and a German App, Spectrm, which aims to help publishers distribute their content to matched consumers via text message.
