Google is good for the economy, according to a study posted on the company’s blog. In 2011, Google’s search and advertising tools brought in $80 billion for 1.8 million advertisers, website publishers, and nonprofits in the U.S.
Google published a breakdown of its reported economic impact in an interactive map of the United States. In New York, for example, the company employs more than 2,800 full-time workers in two office locations. In 2011, there were 140,000 businesses and nonprofits using AdWords and AdSense — 846 of the nonprofits received $28.9 million worth of free advertising through the Google Grants program. The total impact was $11.1 billion in economic activity, or as Google put it, “enough for every New Yorker to dine on more than 100 buffalo wings during the next 5 Super Bowls.”
Along with the numbers, the report includes interviews with local business owners like Joelle Obsatz, who co-owns the Butterfield Market and Catering company with members of her family in New York City. Obsatz says her company has seen a five to 10% increase in profits since she “ramped up” her AdWords campaign three years ago and that she plans to add e-commerce to the site in 2012.
Stories like hers speak to the many small businesses in America that are not based on the Web — a good reminder that society moves a little more slowly than technological innovation.

“All in all,” writes Margo Georgiadis, Google VP of Americas sales, “it’s clear that the economic impact of the web is huge; the Internet is where business is done and jobs are created.” At least it will be, if Google has anything to say about it.
