Google Changes China Tactics

Google will stop redirecting users of its China search engine to its Hong Kong site after Chinese officials threatened to pull its Internet operating license.

Google shut down its China-based search engine in March after a prolonged debate with the government over its refusal to censor search results.

Currently, Google automatically redirects everyone using Google.cn to Google.com.hk, which offers unfiltered search in simplified Chinese. The company said this has been working well for users and for Google, but government officials insisted the redirect was “unacceptable”

Google’s Internet Content Provider license is up for renewal on June 30, and the company indicated that if the redirecting continues, its license would not be renewed.
