Google’s Google+ social network is either a tremendous success or giant flop depending on which tech pundit you read and believe. While browsing through the current top free apps in the Android Market, I noticed something interesting: The Google+ for Android app is not in the top 10, 20 or 100 free apps there.
Android Market: Top Free in Apps
It isn’t that Android users are not interested in social. Facebook Messenger held the number one spot while Facebook for Android was number three (Gmail was number two). The official Twitter for Android app checks in at #19. Google+ for Android finally appeared at #131 in the list of top free Android apps. The app itself appears to be well regarded by those who use it. It has an excellent average rating of 4.5 stars out of possible 5.
The number of downloads for each Android app tells the tale:
1,861,087 : Facebook
217,630 : Twitter
89,112 : Google+
All of these download numbers are relatively low given the tens of millions of Android phones sold.
