Gay media consolidation: the new gay marriage

PlanetOut, which operates a bunch of gay-interest websites, announced yesterday that it will acquire LA-based LPI Media, the LA-based publisher of Out and Advocate, for $24 million, thus merging the two biggest gay media companies in the country and creating one really big, really gay media mini-behemoth.

FishbowlLA is concerned about this development. Media consolidation is a bedrock principle of our society, and if gay companies start doing it, it loses its significance. Plus, everyone knows that mergers like this tend to make formerly interesting magazines staid and boring, so, frankly, I don’t even know why the gay media companies think consolidation is something to covet.
