FOX Anchor Apologizes For Fatshaming Kelly Clarkson

Fairly mild for a celebrity apology.

In case you missed it, during a radio interview on The Mike Gallagher Show last Friday, FOX News anchor Chris Wallace slung some seriously tasteless insults at singer/new mom Kelly Clarkson. (Media Matters, of course, has the audio.)

Gallagher was the first to take a cheap shot, saying:

“Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up.”

In response, Wallace said:

“Really? Do we want to talk about some of your friends? Kelly Clarkson’s got a lovely voice.”

And if he had stopped there, refocusing the conversation on Clarkson’s talent rather than her dress size, he might have actually appeared somewhat valiant. But instead, he went on to say:

“She could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while.”

Shockingly, listeners didn’t find the fatshaming funny, and as the news of Wallace’s comments spread, so did the outrage.

On Sunday, in an attempt to quell the backlash, Wallace issued a formal apology to the American Idol star, saying:

“I sincerely apologize to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment. I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her.”

We would suggest that Wallace “stay off the radio for a little while,” but that’s what he does for a living…
