Instapaper Finally Makes Its Android Debut (TechCrunch) Given Instapaper creator Marco Arment’s less-than-enthusiastic stance on Android, it didn’t seem like an Android version of his popular story-saving app would ever see the light of day. A handful of people have tried to bring the immensely useful service to Android with varying degrees of success, but Arment and mobile developer Mobelux have surprised us all by offering up their own official solution. Yes, that’s right. Instapaper for Android has finally been released into the Google Play Store. VentureBeat What’s more interesting is why Arment decided to finally adopt Android: “I think it was the success of the Kindle Fire and the Nook that tipped my hand,” Arment told The Verge in an interview. “They sold millions of units. I am not a fan of the 7-inch form factor, I mean what is that, a padfone, a phablet? But for me personally, Instapaper is now a tablet app first and smartphone second.” CNET If you're not familiar with Instapaper, it's a tool that lets users quickly and easily save articles for reading later. So, if you don't have time to dive into that lengthy blog post or interview, you can simply use Instapaper to create a short-term (or long-term) bookmark and easily pull it up at a more convenient time. You can even read your saved items while you're offline. The Verge Instapaper for Android looks a lot like Instapaper for iPhone, and that's a good thing. There are Holo-ified elements aplenty, but on the whole, the Instapaper experience remains the same, minus a few key features. Foursquare Keeps Teasing 'All New' App Set To Launch Thursday (WebProNews) For over a week now, Foursquare has been teasing us with screenshots from its upcoming update to their mobile app. A few days ago, it let us know that the new Foursquare was scheduled to launch this week, and now it has put an actual date on the record -- Thursday. Mashable The new elements look as though they’ll supplement the app’s Explore tab, leveraging users’ check-ins to recommend places to go and offer nearby deals. Explore launched in mobile apps in March 2011 and made its way to desktops this January. However, the microblogging network has purchased Nclud’s intellectual property for an undisclosed sum and hired its two co-founders to high-level design roles at Twitter. Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone Has Book Deal (AP) The co-founder of Twitter has a story to tell, and he'll need more than 140 characters. Biz Stone has a deal with Grand Central Publishing for "Things a Little Bird Told Me," a book about creative thinking that will include personal anecdotes. Study: First-Time Moms Spend More Time on Facebook After Giving Birth (AllFacebook) We’re not sure how they find the time, or the open arms, but 44 percent of new, first-time mothers spend more time on Facebook after childbirth compared with before, according to a new study published in the July issue of journal Family Relations. In the study — reportedly the first to track and analyze changes in Facebook use among new parents — researchers analyzed responses from 300 new mothers and fathers to questions regarding how they interacted with the social network nine months after the birth of their first child. Square Doubles Its Retail Presence After Landing in 20,000 Outlets (TechCrunch) Square has doubled its presence in retail stores since the beginning of the year by landing in about 20,000 outlets nationwide. At the beginning of the year, the company told us that it was in about 10,000 outlets. Now, Square’s readers are at Walgreens, Staples and FedEx Office stores on top of being sold in Apple, Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Target. Alcohol Brands Testing New Age Verification Tool on Twitter (AllTwitter) Prior to April 2011, alcohol brands were banned from advertising on Twitter. Now, they’re working with Twitter itself to come up with a way to verify their followers’ age and target their products to the over-21 tweeting crowd.
