Former WNYW/Channel 5 Reporter Andrea Day 'Excited' to Take Career in 'Different Direction'

Andrea Day, the high-energy 14-year WNYW/Channel 5 reporter, left the station last Wednesday, after failing to have her contract renewed. But Day tells FishbowlNY that it was her decision to leave---looking to spread her wings in a new venture. "It was time, as a person, to do more than that," Day admits. "I wanted to move in a different direction." However, Day, isn't ready to offer any specifics about her next move. The veteran reporter Day, who embodies a positive spirit, has nothing but praise for her former bosses Lew Leone and Dianne Doctor, and especially her former colleagues. "Fox can be a great place," Day says. "...Rosanna [Scotto] is a great friend and Ernie [Anastos], and I'll stay in touch with them forever." Day is also grateful to those on the other side of the camera. "I feel like I made a real connection with viewers," Day says. Day began at Channel 5 in 1997, ultimately winning three Emmys for her investigative work. "I never planned to just stop and end my career as a street reporter," Day admits. "Although I love it. I have such a passion for the news business." For Day, a stand-out memory from her time at Channel 5 is more personal, and horrifying. Her two-month old son died during her time at the station. "Without a lot of support that I got from my friends at Fox, I don't know if I could have made it through," Day says. Prior to arrival in the news business, Day was an advertising heavyweight, decorated with several awards for creating many campaigns including Clairol, Oscar Mayer, and Toys R Us. "I had that great background of writing television commercials when I went into news," Day recalls. "I was great at making every word count. Day says WNYW loved her writing style, an ability to tell a story in a short amount time--like her 30 second ads. After her lengthy career at Channel 5, Day calls it the place she "grew up" professionally. "I'm really excited about my next move," Day says. "I can't wait actually." For now, Day, who had a busy work schedule, is getting "reacquainted" with her family. "They couldn't pick me out of a lineup," Day jokes.
