Remember, just as much as they’re interviewing you, you’re interviewing them so be sure to make every second of that interview count.
Per our friends at Brazen Careerist, there are a few questions to keep in mind:
1. How frequently do you give feedback to your team? And when? This not only gives you an idea of his or her managerial style, it gives you insight into the goal setting and annual year-end review process.
2. What qualities do you look for in a successful teammate? If you want to make your mark, this is certainly one way to do it. Plus, it shows what your potential boss is looking for in a top notch candidate. Win-win situation!
3. How often do you interact with people who work for you? If you want an inside look at his or her daily interaction, this is it.
The piece points out, “Are you a free-range employee who enjoys autonomy and some distance? Or are you more of an elbow-rubber who values close interaction and frequent recognition? Be sure the answer you hear can give you the kind of work environment you enjoy.”
4. What are the other team members like? When listening to the answer, it’s not so much what the hiring manager says but how he or she says it. Is there a sense of pride and respect? Disdain or frustration?
5. Why did you join this company and what has kept you here? Has your boss been there six months or six years? The piece mentions, “What motivates your boss? Does she sound upbeat? Simply put, does it sound like she likes her job? It’s tough for an unhappy employee to be a great manager, so consider yourself warned if her answer sounds flat or uninspired.”
