The new Social API from Firefox is out of beta, as Mozilla released Firefox 17, complete with the application-programming interface’s integration with Facebook Messenger.

Mozilla announced in early October that Facebook Messenger was the first application it was using to test its Social API, releasing it in beta later that month.

The Social API is a way for Mozilla to allow developers — including but not limited to Facebook — to integrate their social services directly into Firefox, and users can go to the Facebook Messenger for Firefox site and click “turn on,” after which Facebook Messenger will appear in their social sidebars.

Once it is activated, Facebook control buttons will appear to the right of users’ location bars, and the sidebar containing status updates and Messenger is visible unless users choose to hide it by clicking on the Facebook button.
