The 2011 event is underway at The Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C., and it runs through April 10.
Fans attending the tournament can access the mobile site by scanning any of the several tags, or QR codes (quick response), located on signage around the stadium, and the site includes daily schedules, player profiles, updated draws, a stadium map, and social media posts (including players’ Facebook and Twitter feeds).
Family Circle Cup general manager Bob Moran said:
Our fans, and the way they consume media, are extremely diverse. We want to provide all of our fans the most convenient access to the Family Circle Cup as possible. For our fans who use their mobile devices as their day-to-day information source, our mobile website will be the perfect tool.
Our Facebook Likes have almost doubled over the past five months, so we know our fans want to connect with the event in this way. We won’t stop printing ticket brochures anytime soon, but we’re always looking for new ways to communicate with our younger audience.
We’re tapping into multiple online assets and taking our communication to the next level by utilizing all types of social media. Overall our goal is for fans to have a variety of ways to interact with the Family Circle Cup and get the most out of their experience.
MRA Media Group designed the mobile site for the event, and website designer Andrew Machota added:
The Family Circle Cup is now in a select group of professional tennis tournaments worldwide to have a fully functional mobile website for their fans. We’re excited to provide such a powerful solution that is capable of reaching all fans, regardless of what kind of smartphone they own.
