The symbol (#) used for grouping social media posts by topic has long been in use by other networks including Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+, and to some extent, Pinterest. What will it do for Facebook?

With the announcement of Graph Search, Facebook is making its entire community searchable by interest and other demographic information. Hashtags could potentially add conversation topics into the mix, which would not require a user to “like” a page in order for a related subject to come up in the search results.

Facebook also makes the information from its users’ posts and comments searchable through its integration with the search engine Bing.
