Mom’s Facebook Posts Offer Clues About Kids' Murders

Homicide detectives do not know why Rebekah Sanders killed her two children, but her Facebook page offers plenty of clues.

A mother outside of Houston, Texas killed her two children before shooting herself in the head Tuesday. Sherriff’s deputies found the mother, 29-year-old Rebekah Sanders, in her duplex bleeding from an apparent self-inflicted gun wound next to her children’s bodies.

Sanders was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. Homicide detectives do not know why the mother killed her two children (Gabriel Sanders, 3, and Gabrielle Woods, 5) but her Facebook page offers plenty of clues.

Earlier Facebook posts by Sanders hinted that she was troubled in the days leading up to the shooting. She mentioned a recent hospital visit with her children, boredom and sleeplessness. It was clear from her status updates that something was wrong.

Neighbors told the Houston Chronicle that the family of three moved in a few weeks ago and no one knew them well but they hadn’t noticed anything unusual. No one heard any gunshots, including those who lived next door.

Messages of “rest in peace” started filling up Sanders’ Facebook page but the Harris County Sherriff’s Office confirmed with KPRC Houston that Sanders remained in critical condition and on a ventilator Thursday.

Deputies also told the local television station that there were no visible signs of trauma to the children and they were not shot. The county medical examiner’s office said the autopsy on Gabrielle was completed, but the cause of death has not yet been determined. Officials said it could take up to two weeks to determine how the children were killed.

Sanders’ Facebook profile indicates a life of struggle. She describes herself as: “I am a young lady who has been through more than one could imagine. I am truly grateful to God that I made it through.”
