Facebook has announced a new “Journalists on Facebook” page that’s meant to help journalists with sources, stories, and reader engagement.
“The Page will provide journalists with best practices for integrating the latest Facebook products with their work and connecting with the Facebook audience of more than 500 million people,” writes Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s director of media partnerships. The social network is also launching a “Facebook Journalism Meetup” program of hosted events around the world, starting with one on April 27 in Palo Alto, CA.
GigaOm compares Facebook and Twitter as a resource for journalists, pointing out that Twitter has proved exceedingly useful for capturing stories in real-time. And Twitter provides a page with best practices.
Facebook’s best practice page has info that anyone who’s using Facebook (which is just about everyone) would probably know — publishing things to the site, engaging with readers, etc.
It will be interesting to see how journalists (or if journalists) decide to use this page or any other related services that Facebook has in the works. It has gotten more than 12,000 “likes” in one day. Once it’s a little more fleshed out, publicists will be better able to tell how they can use it to communicate with reporters in a way that’s welcome.
