The Independence Day holiday dominated the list of Hot Topics on Facebook and Instagram in July from Facebook IQ, the social network’s research arm.

Canada Day, Bastille Day and Christmas in July were also discussed frequently by users of both social networks, while Instagram users also mentioned the upcoming D23 Disney fan club expo.

The upcoming boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor dominated sports talk on both Facebook and Instagram in July, while users on the latter also mentioned Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Derrick Rose and ESPN’s X Games.

Brands to crack the Facebook Hot Topics list included Krispy Kreme, Billboard and Apple’s iPod, while Intel, Final Fantasy XII, The Criterion Collection and Pitchfork Media heated up Instagram.

Hit HBO drama Game of Thrones dominated entertainment talk on both social networks, while Facebook users also discussed Kid Rock, Garth Brooks and Doctor Who, and Spider-Man, Charlie Puth and George A. Romero captured the fancy of Instagrammers.

And late Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington’s suicide led discussion about people on both social networks.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
