JUST MARRIED: Facebook Data Science Team Examines 2014 Honeymoon Check-Ins

The Facebook Data Science Team enjoyed a honeymoon period recently, using data from check-ins on the social network to determine the top honeymoon destinations in 2014, for both U.S. users and globally.

Findings by the Facebook Data Science Team included:

  • 19 percent of U.S. couples traveled internationally, but couples from South Korea traveled the greatest distances, with a median of 4,000 miles away from home.
  • Five of the top 10 U.S. destinations chosen by global honeymooners were in Hawaii.
  • The most overall check-ins by honeymooners are from Las Vegas, but couples from the U.S. were much less likely to check in from there than international couples.
  • More than 100 couples checked in at locations more than 12,000 miles away from home for their honeymoons in 2014, placing them nearly on the opposite end of the planet. This group was dominated by couples living in Spain and traveling to New Zealand, as well as couples traveling from Peru to Thailand.

  3. Honolulu
  4. Playa del Carmen, Mexico
  5. Cancún, Mexico
  6. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  7. Montego Bay, Jamaica
  8. Antalya, Turkey
  9. Castries, St. Lucia
  10. Gramado, Brazil

The top 10 2014 honeymoon destinations in the U.S. for all couples on Facebook were:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Lahaina
  3. Honolulu
  4. Līhuʻe, Hawaii
  5. Key West, Fla.
  6. Poʻipū, Hawaii
  7. Kīhei, Hawaii
  8. Gatlinburg, Tenn.
  9. New York
  10. Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The top 10 2014 honeymoon destinations in the U.S. — excluding Hawaii — for all couples on Facebook were:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Key West
  3. Gatlinburg
  4. New York
  5. Lake Buena Vista
  6. Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
  7. Orlando, Fla.
  8. Whitehouse, Texas
  9. San Francisco
  10. Miami

The top 10 destinations in Hawaii for all couples were:

  1. Lahaina, Maui
  2. Honolulu, O’ahu
  3. Līhuʻe, Kaua’i
  4. Poʻipū, Kaua’i
  5. Kīhei, Maui
  6. Kahului, Maui
  7. Koloa, Kaua’i
  8. Makena, Maui
  9. Wailea, Maui
  10. Princeville, Kaua’i

The top 10 non-U.S. destinations for all couples were:

  1. Playa del Carmen
  2. Cancún
  3. Punta Cana
  4. Montego Bay
  5. Antalya
  6. Castries

  10. Malé, Maldives

Finally, the top destinations for U.S. couples were:
