The Boston Phoenix obtained the information Facebook sent to the Boston Police Department in the case of late “Craigslist Killer” Philip Markoff.
The information Facebook supplied to the Boston Police Department, on paper, included:
- Wall posts;
- Photos that Markoff uploaded and was tagged in;
- His friends on Facebook (unpublished by The Boston Phoenix); and
- Log-in and Internet-protocol data.
Markoff committed suicide in a Boston jail in August 2010, but, as The Boston Phoenix pointed out, the files released by the Boston Police Department contained information on 308 of his Facebook friends.
