Facebook Apps Leaked Users Profile Data Since 2007

If you’ve ever played Farmville or Scrabble on Facebook, then you may have given advertisers access to your account. According to Internet security firm Symantec, Facebook has accidentally been leaking profile data for years.

The Symantec blog explains: “Third parties, in particular advertisers, have accidentally had access to Facebook users’ accounts including profiles, photographs, chat, and also had the ability to post messages and mine personal information. Fortunately, these third-parties may not have realized their ability to access this information. We have reported this issue to Facebook, who has taken corrective action to help eliminate this issue.”

It might not be a big deal. A Facebook spokesman told The Wall Street Journal: “We’ve conducted a thorough investigation which revealed no evidence of this issue resulting in a user’s private information being shared with unauthorized third parties.”
