Communications and marketing company Engine USA announced yesterday that it has acquired Deep Focus, a full-service interactive marketing agency based in Brooklyn. Formed in February 2010, Engine USA is the New York branch of the Engine Group, which was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in London, UK. The acquisition follows Engine’s announcement last week that an affiliate of global private investment firm H.I.G. Capital had invested $100 million in the company.
Said Peter Scott, Chairman of Engine Group and Engine USA in a statement: “the acquisition of Deep Focus is the first we have made following the announcement of the investment in Engine by H.I.G. It reflects our long stated strategy of taking Engine into key global markets,” which include the USA, China, Brazil and parts of Europe.
Founded in 2002, Deep Focus is the agency behind AMC’s “Mad Men Yourself” application and has also worked with Microsoft, Nintendo, Diageo, AMC, Weight Watchers, Bulgari, The Museum of Modern Art, Samsung and ESPN. “This isn’t an exit, it’s a grand freaking entrance, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got up our sleeves,” said founder and CEO Ian Schafer in a blog post, and in the press release he said, “joining Engine enables us to benefit from the scale and resources of a world-class company, while allowing us to continue providing the breakthrough innovative digital engagement solutions we are known for. We are especially excited to be working with Martin Puris and John Bernbach, who are renowned for their tremendous talent, creativity and industry leadership.”
Martin Puris, Engine USA’s CEO, is the former co-founder, chairman and CEO of Ammirati & Puris, while John Bernbach is serving as the company’s COO following his tenure as chairman and CEO of the Bernbach Group. The two joined Engine USA in February of this year.
