Emerging popular Android apps: Temple Run, Angry Birds Space and Paper Camera

Games dominate the top grossing and free Android app charts this week, with unsurprisingly prominent showings from Zynga, the now Zynga-owned OMGPOP and Rovio. Conversely, Android users willing to part with some cash for apps seem to be getting a little more productive this week with a variety of productivity, backup and device management apps making strong showings. Despite the launch of popular photo filtering/social networking app Instagram on Android this week, there's no sign of it in the charts as yet -- a surprise, given its popularity on iOS. This week's top grossing Android apps Zynga Poker -- Zynga's long-running Texas Hold'em game takes the top spot on the top grossing charts this week, with Dragonplay's Live Holdem Poker Pro snapping at its heels from the No. 2 spot. Zynga Poker has been installed more than 5,000,000 times and remains popular on all formats -- iOS, Android and Facebook. Samurai vs. Zombies Defense -- Glu Mobile's new free-to-play strategic defense title takes the No. 5 spot on the top grossing charts this week thanks to its in-app purchases of weapons and other virtual items. Temple Run -- The immensely popular free 3D "run and dodge" game Temple Run from Imangi Studios has finally made the jump from iOS to Android. Its in-app purchases of currency have seen it to the No.8 top grossing spot. Despite numerous Android users on its Facebook page complaining about compatibility issues, and the game has been installed more than a million times so far. The Sims FreePlay -- Despite its parent publisher being voted "the worst company in America" by The Consumerist readers, the free-to-play real-time Sims title continues to prove popular and profitable, with a No. 9 showing in the top grossing charts. Scramble With Friends Free -- Zynga's immensely popular asynchronous social game series continues to prove a steady moneymaker for the company, with the free version of the Boggle-like Scramble With Friends showing up at No. 14 in the top grossing charts. The game monetizes primarily through the sale of "tokens," which are expended with every game played. This week's top free Android apps Angry Birds Space -- In unsurprising news, Rovio's latest avian-flinging simulator takes the top spot on the free apps chart. Check out our review here. Draw Something Free -- OMGPOP's Pictionary-like game is still proving enormously popular, but has been dethroned from the top of the Google Play charts by Rovio's latest and Temple Run, now sitting in the No. 3 position. The recent Twitter-based controversy surrounding OMGPOP's takeover by Zynga does not appear to have harmed the game's success to a significant degree. Six-Guns -- Gameloft's Red Dead Redemption-like take on open-world Wild West gameplay takes the No. 15 spot on the free apps chart. The free-to-play game monetizes through in-app purchases of currency and experience points. Tiki Kart 3D -- The free kart-racing game from Arb Studios takes the No. 19 spot on the free apps chart this week. The Mario Kart-esque game monetizes through in-app purchases of new vehicles, tracks and other virtual items, and is also ad-supported. It has seen over 5 million installs. Advanced Task Killer -- ReChild's memory management app shows up at No. 24 on the free apps list this week. The app makes it easy for users to shut down unnecessary background apps to clean memory and save battery life, and has been installed more than 10 million times to date. This week's top paid Android apps Cut The Rope -- Physics puzzler Cut The Rope from Zeptolab takes the No. 4 spot on the paid app charts this week, with its sequel Cut The Rope: Experiments coming up behind it in No. 5. The game was updated on March 30, but this appears to have been nothing more than a bug fix release. Titanium Backup Pro Key -- The "Pro" upgrade for Titanium Track's backup application takes the No. 8 spot on the paid apps chart this week. The app allows rooted Android users to manage multiple backups, migrate system data across different ROMs and manage multiple users for apps such as games. SwiftKey X Keyboard -- TouchType Ltd's "natural language" keyboard takes the No. 10 paid app slot this week. The app learns a user's typing habits and adapts. It can also be personalized using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter or blog posts. The app has been installed more than 500,000 times to date, with part of its success likely due to the fact there is a free version available for users to "try before they buy." Paper Camera -- JFDP Labs' camera app allows users to apply various paper-themed real-time effects to their camera, including sketch, cartoon, half-tone and noir styles. It's the No. 17 paid app this week. Osmos HD -- The hit abstract iOS game from Hemisphere Games that sees players taking on the role of a galactic mote shows up as the No. 19 paid Android app this week. Players must absorb smaller organisms to grow their mote while avoiding larger predators. The "HD" version is optimized for both tablets and phones.
