Emerging Android Apps: Triple Town, NFL Pro and Sonic the Hedgehog

This week’s Android round-up continued to mix things up, with a variety of new apps appearing on the charts and a healthy selection of old apps returning after updates. Games were the dominant genre this week, with Spry Fox’s Triple Town cracking the top grossing charts thanks to a prominent Android market feature. This week’s top grossing Android apps [Update] Tap Fish - Gameview Studios regains the No. 1 spot on the Android charts this week with its game Tap Fish. The game, which earns over $1 million dollars a month, is one of the most popular titles on the Android market, and has seen over 10 million downloads. The game was last updated on Jan. 28 to add a new mystery breeding event and support for shorter breeding times. Two of Gameview's co-founders just left after hitting their earnout dates following the company's acquisition by DeNA. [Update] Smurfs Village - Capcom’s Smurfs Village is this week’s No. 7 top grossing Android app, slightly ahead of where the game is on the iOS charts this week. The strong performance of games like Smurfs Village have driven up Capcom’s mobile revenues significantly, earning $52.6 million in the last quarter alone. Tiny Village - Prehistoric-themed citybuilder Tiny Village is this week’s No. 12 top grossing Android app. The game has racked up more than 1 million downloads since its release, many of them in the past 30 days. TinyCo updated the app on Jan. 29 with some minor bug fixes and stability enhancements. Frontline Commando - Glu Mobile’s game Frontline Commando holds the No. 19 spot on the charts this week. A free-to-play third person shooter, Frontline Commando has performed strongly since its release. Triple Town - Moving all the way down to the No. 40 position, we have Spry Fox’s match 3 puzzle game, Triple Town. Rising up the charts thanks to an Android market feature and a staff pick selection, the mobile version of Triple Town is free-to-play and offers players the chance to purchase unlimited turns for a one-time in-app purchase. This week’s top free Android Apps [Update] Facebook for Android - Facebook has more than 425 million users who access the site from mobile devices, so it’s no surprise that Facebook’s official Android app is No. 1 on the free charts this week. According to the app’s marketplace listing, it has seen somewhere between 100 and 500 million lifetime downloads. Yahoo! Mail - Yahoo! may have just killed off 10 of its mobile apps for underperformance, but Yahoo! Mail continues to be a hit for the company. This week’s No. 22 free app, it has seen a significant uptick in downloads recently. NFL Pro 2012 - This week’s No. 29 free Android app is Gameloft’s NFL Pro 2012. An officially licensed free-to-play football game, NFL Pro 2012 features all 32 NFL teams and more than 2,000 real players. Player can either earn points in matches to unlock new plays, stadiums and stat boost, or buy them via in-app purchases. Scare Your Friend Ultimate - Moving down to the No. 36 spot is Zasphan Mobile’s Scare Your Friends Ultimate, an app that will show suddenly display a scary face after a set amount of time. The app is well reviewed and has received more than 1 million downloads. Solitaire - MobilityWare’s computer classic Solitaire closes out the free charts in the No. 50 spot this week. The app has experienced a sharp jump in downloads over the last month, and features both the draw one and draw three variations of the game. This week’s top paid Android Apps [Update] Where’s My Water - Disney’s hit game Where’s My Water hits No. 1 on the paid Android charts this week thanks its latest expansion. Now featuring an all new character named Cranky with his own set of puzzles that require players to get clean water away from things, Where’s My Water costs $0.99 and Cranky’s story is unlocked via a $0.99 in-app purchase. Jelly Defense - Polish studio Infinite Dreams returns to our Android charts after a long absence in the No. 23 spot with its $2.99 game, Jelly Defense. A unique looking tower defense game, Jelly Defense was just updated on Jan. 5. Sonic 4 Episode 1 - Moving all the way down to the No. 46 spot, we find Sega’s Sonic 4 Episode 1 at the tail end of the paid charts this week. Costing a relatively expensive $3.99, the game is off to a solid, but not out standing start on Android, racking up between 5 and 10 thousand installs since its release. The app was updated on Jan. 30 to add Android 4.0 compatibility. XDA Premium - The premium, ad-free version of the XDA Developer’s website app, XDA Premium is this week’s No. 48 paid app. Costing $1.49, the app allows XDA members to access the site’s forums and customize the app’s color scheme. Scanner Radio Pro - Finally, closing out the paid charts we find independent developer Gordon Edwards’ app Scanner Radio Pro in the No. 50 spot. Originally developed for BlackBerry, the $2.99 app allows listers to listen into the radio transmissions of more than 3,100 police and fire departments from all over the world, bookmark favorites, find scanners close to them and set alerts.
