At E3 2016, Microsoft and Mojang announced the launch of The Friendly Update for Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. The update includes two major features, Realms and cross-platform multiplayer, as well as support for pistons, horses, pig-riding and more.

With cross-platform multiplayer, users can play with others even if they’re on different platforms. This includes users playing Minecraft on Gear VR. This multiplayer functionality is powered by Xbox Live, so users will need Xbox Live accounts to play.
