Facebook opened its first office in the Arab sector of the Middle East, in Dubai, with the hopes of stoking advertising opportunities to target its 45 million users in the Middle East and North Africa.

AP reported that Head of Global Marketing Solutions, Middle East and North Africa Jonathan Labin will lead the Dubai office, which opened its doors with three employees at business park Internet City, where Microsoft and Google also have offices.

Facebook teamed up with Cairo-based Connect Ads in 2010 in an effort to engage advertisers in the region.

Vice President and Managing Director for Europe, the Mideast, and Africa Joanna Shields told AP the decision to open the Dubai office was purely commercial, adding:

People on Facebook use it to organize rallies for all kinds of elections around the world.
