Dr. Mehmet Oz, meet Dr. Samir Husni. Or, as the latter is more informally referred to, Mr. Magazine.
The University of Mississippi Ph.D. professor is well-known for his annual tabulations of print magazine launches and burnouts. In 2014, per the New York Post‘s Keith J. Kelly, it’s ultimately, still, all about Oprah:
Husni tagged Dr. Oz The Good Life, which debuted in February, as his Magazine of the Year.
“It was the first magazine since O, the Oprah Magazine, in 2000 that had to go back on press for a second printing of its debut issue,” he said.
The joint venture between Hearst and Oz, the heart surgeon/talk show host, plans to up the rate base to 800,000 next year from its launch rate base of 450,000.
We’re no experts. But it would seem that from a newsstand karma point of view, anyone planning a magazine launch in 2015 might want to wrap it around a surname that starts with the letter “O.”
At the beginning of the year, pre-magazine launch, Oz told our “Lunch” columnist Diane Clehane that a key to his daily regimen is his weekday, lunchtime 15-minute power nap. Tomorrow, New Year’s Day, we say – sleep in, Dr. Oz! You’ve earned it.
