San Diego based freelancer Mary Buckheit wins the award this week for most original sports piece slant. After participating in a small, exclusive May media event in Marina del Rey, she today filed her ESPN.com profile of South African explorer Mike Horn (pictured).
Her set-up: Horn is the real-life equivalent to Dos Equis’ “Most Interesting Man in the World.” Her payoff: a dozen and a half observations written in the style of the TV ad campaign’s trademark voiceovers. Here are just a few of Buckheit’s bits:
He’s won trophies for his game face alone.
His personality is so magnetic, he is unable to carry credit cards.
Buckheit eventually gets around to writing about Horn’s Pangaea Young Explorers Program, another too-good-to-be-true aspect of this guy’s M.O. But it is her Dos Equis riffs that make this article truly golden.
P.S. We’re not sure Buckheit is aware that the Jewish actor who plays the beer ad playboy lives in the very same Marina del Rey marina where the Horn presser was staged. She does not appear to be.
