If you’re a woman looking to become a mom, you might want to move north. According to Working Mother magazine’s 100 Best Companies for 2010, 24 of the organizations with the best mom benefits sit in New York. And a dominating 42 companies were in the Northeast.
Every year Working Mother releases the list, grading companies that provide the most family friendly benefits “that help keep working moms’ careers on track.” Companies applied to get on the list by answering 600 questions about benefits the organizations have to help the working mom. Then the magazine scores the company based on workforce representation, flexibility programs and leave policies, among other topics.
While Working Mother doesn’t rank the top 100, they do separate out the top ten, and the media industry snuck in there thanks to Discovery Communications. Discovery boasted nine paid weeks for mothers to bond with a new child, while fathers and adoptive parents could get up to three weeks off. Also, the company provides cheap caregivers, if needed once you return to work, according to Working Mother.
AOL, Pearson and Turner Broadcasting System also got into the top 100 representing media companies. As for location, the East dominated. New Jersey followed New York’s lead with the second most companies (9). But, surprisingly, no representative from Boston made the final cut.
