Despite What You May Have Read, Windows Mobile Already has an Over the Air (OTA) Update Feature. But, it has Never Been Used!

Every now and then, I read an item like this one from SlashPhone…

Future Windows Mobile to Feature Over-the-air OS Updates?

Here’s the funny thing about OTA Windows Mobile updates… It already exists. You can see the Windows Update icon in my HTC TyTn’s settings Window (Windows Mobile 6.0). The problem is, however, that to my knowledge it has never been exercised.

So, SlashPhone is actually correct in saying that Microsoft is working on it. But, I suspect the issue is less technical and more political in the sense that this requires coordination between Microsoft’s Windows Mobile team, hardware manufacturers, and mobile phone carriers to pull this off.
