Demand Media Announces ‘Writer’s Choice’ Winners

Normally, a freelance writer toiling for Demand Media / Studios would have to crank out dozens of articles to earn $700 to $1,000. But this holiday season, a quartet of contributors found that range thanks to the Santa Monica company’s “Writer’s Choice” competition.

The $1,000 Grand Prize winner of the year-end writing derby is Jenni Wiltz for “Give Bloat the Boot: My Low-Sodium Diet Makeover.” Per editor Joe Crosby:

At first blush, you might think, “Sodium? Really?” But Jenni managed to approach a topic that’s been done to six ways to Sunday – diet, what foods we eat, etc. – in such a compelling way that she had at least one in-house editor running to her cupboards to see what she’d been eating.

Three other writers were awarded site-specific prizes of $700 each: Susan Brockett for “A Locavore Primer: Community Supported Agriculture” (LIVESTRONG.COM); Lisa Sefcik for “Dangerous Beauty: Shopaholics Show the Dark Side of Retail Therapy” (eHow.com); and Glenda Taylor for “A Touch of Glamour in the City of Angels” (Tyra Banks’ Beauty and Fashion).

Taylor’s piece, which like the others is presently under publication consideration, sounds especially intriguing. It’s about a non-profit that provides makeovers to homeless women.

Update – 01/05/11: Demand’s Communications Director Kevin Morgan emailed FBLA to let us know that their blog item has been updated to also reflect the fact that each and every one of the contest’s 149 participants was paid a flat $250 submission recompense, separate from any of the above mentioned award money. That’s a total of $37,250!
