It is apparently darn near impossible to launch an Android Tablet running Android 2.0 or newer (current release is 2.2). Here’s the latest debacle.
From the Direct2Dell blog entry linked above: Like I mentioned in my previous Dell Streak post, the Android 2.2 over the air update (Froyo) will come later this year. We will ship Dell Streak with Android 1.6.
Android 1.6 (Donut) was released in September 2009. Android 2.0 was released in October 2009. Android OS 3.0 (Gingerbread) is tentatively scheduled for release in the 4th quarter of this year (2010). This means that the Dell Streak may get an upgrade to Froyo (2.2) around the time Google releases Gingerbread (3.0).
I was one of the many people who requested to be notified when pre-ordering began. But, the 1.6 firmware coupled with the lack of support for T-Mobile’s 3G network (AT&T only device) moves the Dell Streak out of my “must buy” list to “who cares” list.
My prediction? Despite the excitement surrounding the release of the Dell Streak, it will be a sales dud.
